‘Really?’  keeps audiences engaged and is guaranteed to drive rich discussion on a number of key subjects. The film is accompanied by a resource pack put together by wellbeing and education specialists, designed to fully support the presentation of the film. The powerful style of the resource, challenging issues covered, including young people’s mental health, means it is best suited for years 10 and 11.

Film drama removes us from our ‘everyday’ and transports us to a place guided by the actors we are watching. While confronting and challenging us to imagine a new world, our minds are open to new thoughts and information. Few other platforms provide such a rich environment for conscious and unconscious learning. In our experience, this form of engagement is one of our most powerful tools in delivering important life messages.

The film was produced by a local housing association in Maidstone and stars young people from the local area. While the location and demographics reflect that area, the themes covered are likely to resonate in other parts of the country: the resource is designed to develop key skills and attributes in young people including understanding risk, developing resilience, tolerance and respect and the ability to make healthy, independent choices.

See the How to Order section below to purchase your film and resource pack.

The film should always be used in the context of the accompanying Really? Resource Pack, which supports teachers with guidance notes and 8 lesson plans to help explore the film’s core themes.

It is also essential that teachers view the film and read the material carefully before using it in the classroom due to the seriousness of the issues it explores, and make sure they are aware of school safeguarding policies and procedures about what to do in the event of pupil disclosures relating to any of the issues raised.

The contents of the Resource Pack are as follows:

  • DVD Really? Film duration 60 minutes
  • DVD Really? Film Extra Feature containing each character’s story

The PSHE Association’s Subject Lead Nick Boddington says

“The whole resource is best considered as a powerful catalyst for learning that helps to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes that young people can apply to such important issues and choices in a real life context. It also provides a series of strong starting points for subsequent learning. This resource doesn’t attempt to show false ‘happy endings’ or offer simplistic messages, instead leaving it open for pupils to explore their own feelings and construct their own strategies”
