Mental Health Support

Samaritans  www.samaritans.org or call free on 116 123.   When life is tough, Samaritans are here to listen, day or night.  You can talk to them about anything that’s troubling you, no matter how difficult.   

Shout  www.giveusashout.org   or text “SHOUT” to 85258.   Shout offers confidential 24/7 crisis text support for times when you need immediate assistance.  

Young Minds  youngminds.org.uk    Provide online advice to young people, with links to help in more urgent situations.  Young people can text the Crisis Messenger free 24/7, text YM to 85258.  Parents can also call for advice on 0808 802 5544  

The Mix   www.themix.org.uk   Aimed at people under 25.  Their helpline is open between 4pm and 11pm, 7 days a week, call 0808 808 4994.  They also run a crisis text service, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, text THEMIX to 85258.  

Childline  www.childline.org.uk  call 0800 1111.   A private and confidential service for children and young people up to the age of 19.  You can contact a Childline counsellor for free about anything – no problem is too big or too small.  

The Silver Line   www.thesilverline.org.uk   Aimed at people over 55.  Their helpline is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  Please call 0800 470 8090. 

CALM (The Campaign Against Living Miserably)  www.thecalmzone.net   For people in the UK who are down or have hit a wall for any reason.  Call 0800 585858 daily – 5pm to midnight or for a free anonymous webchat with trained staff click www.thecalmzone.net/help/get-help 

NHS recommended Apps for mental health www.nhs.uk/apps-library/filter  These apps are assessed against a range of NHS standards, most are free, some require in-app purchases. 

 

Anxiety, OCD and Mood Disorders

Anxiety UK   www.anxietyuk.org.uk  or call 03444 775774, Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm.  Text service available on 07537 416905.  Charity providing support if you have been diagnosed with an anxiety condition. 

No Panic   www.nopanic.org.uk   Support for sufferers of panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  Offers a course to help overcome your phobias or OCD.  Call 0844 967 4848 daily from 10am to 10pm.  Youth helpline for 13 to 20 year olds on 0330 606 1174 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3pm to  6pm, Thursday from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday from 6pm to 8pm.  Calls cost 5p per minute plus your phone provider’s access charge.

OCD Action   www.ocdaction.org.uk   Support for people with OCD.  Includes information on treatment and online resources.  Call 0845 390 6232, Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5pm.  Calls cost 5p per minute plus your phone provider’s access charge.  

OCD UK   www.ocduk.org   Run by people with OCD, for people with OCD.  Includes facts, news and treatments.  Call 0333 212 7890 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.  Support groups and discussion forums online.  

Mood Swings   www.moodswings.org.uk   Aimed at anyone affected by a mood disorder, including friends, families and carers.  Helpline is open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, call 0161 832 3736.  

Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s Society   www.alzheimers.org.uk   Provides information on dementia, including factsheets and helplines.  Call 0300 222 1122 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and 10am to 4pm on weekend. 

Bereavement

Carers and Family Affected

SANE   www.sane.org.uk   Support for anyone affected by mental illness, including families, friends and carers.  Call 0300 304 400 from 4.30pm to 10.30pm every evening, or you can sign up for confidential text care online.  There is also an online support forum where anyone can share their experiences. 

Elefriends   www.elefriends.org.uk   A supportive online community where you can be yourself.  Elefriends is run by Mind.  If you’re a carer needing support you can sign up for their online community. 

Rethink Mental Illness   www.rethink.org   Advice line which provides expert advice and information to people with mental health problems and those who care for them, as well as giving help to health professionals, employers and staff.  Call 0300 5000 927, Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm
