Wellbeing challenge brings laughter, competition and team spirit to the office.. Posted by Justine Clarabut on 6 March, 2018

Modern life can make it hard to be healthy!  One You Kent is all about seeing what small changes you can make to improve your health and wellbeing.  The Wellbeing People team decided to take up the One You 4-week challenge to help kick start some activity and healthy lifestyle changes!    This caused much discussion around what constituted a worthwhile challenge and as so much of our time is spent at work, what we could do that would help to improve our health and wellbeing in the workplace!

I looked up the word ‘challenge’ to understand the true meaning of what exactly it was that we were about to take part in – “a call to someone to participate in a competitive situation or fight to decide who is superior in terms of ability or strength” –  mmm, that wasn’t exactly what we wanted to create within our office, employees fighting for superiority could cause a few heated moments..  the second meaning wasn’t much better either.. “a call to prove or justify something” – this could cause a flurry of self-righteous declarations!!  However, in a simpler form of what felt like quite an aggressive meaning, the competitive nature of a challenge makes the task at hand far more appealing as it brings us together to carry out the various tasks we have each set ourselves; and then to prove or justify to oneself, and each other, that we can do it!  There, we had it and our wellbeing challenges were set… from daily hula hooping, to running a half marathon within the 4 weeks, eating fruit daily, 9 minute planks (ouch!), press ups, desk exercising, stretches and ‘burpees’… thankfully not the windy kind!!

Not only are we partaking in daily exercise, eating well, improving our mental and physical wellbeing and more, these wellbeing challenges have brought a great team spirit to the office with laughter, competition, wellbeing discussions and it has certainly boosted our morale and made us feel good!

We are partners in helping to distribute the OneYou Kent Employer Packs, our sister company Edgar’s Water and Edgar’s Fruit distribution teams are  including the packs with their deliveries around Kent.  Should you want to get involved in the 4-week challenge and help to make your workplace or community healthier, let us know and we will send you a One You Kent Employer pack containing a guide, posters, ideas, challenge planner and more to get you and your employees on the right path to a healthier way of living..
